Launched in the early 2000s to bolster youth development, the first official edition kicked off in 2005 with Real Esteli U20 claiming victory and setting a northern dominance trend. Reforms in 2012 introduced playoffs and regional qualifiers. The 2018 season shone with Diriangen U20's stunning 5-1 final win. COVID-19 halted play in 2020, but 2021 saw record crowds. Notably, stars like Denis Alvarado emerged here, debuting for the senior national team at 19.
Tournament format
Featuring 12 teams from Primera and Liga Primera divisions, split into two groups of six. The regular season has each team playing 10 matches (home and away). Group winners and the top two runners-up advance to semifinals. The final is a single neutral-venue match, often in Managua. Runs February to June, with breaks for internationals. Recent rules mandate minimum local player minutes.
