The Nicaragua U-19 Championship is the premier national youth football competition for players under 19, run by the Nicaraguan Football Federation (FENIFUT). It plays a vital role in nurturing talent in a football-passionate nation, pitting top clubs from the Pacific and Atlantic leagues against each other. The tournament emphasizes skill development, helping scouts spot future stars for senior squads and the national team. Recent seasons have seen improved organization, with a focus on tactical awareness and physical conditioning among young athletes.

History and foundation

Launched in the late 1990s amid FENIFUT's youth reforms, the first official edition was in 1998, won by Real Esteli U-19 after a 3-1 final win over Diriangen. Real Esteli and Diriangen have dominated, claiming over 70% of titles. A notable interruption occurred in 2015 due to civil unrest, but it returned stronger. In 2022, Rivas Pacifica U-19 pulled off a shock victory, ending the big clubs' streak. The competition has launched careers like that of Emilio Saldívar, who moved to MLS.

Tournament format

Split into Clausura (January-May) and Apertura (July-November), it features 10-12 teams from Pacific and Atlantic conferences. Teams play round-robin in groups, with top sides advancing to playoffs: quarterfinals, semifinals, and final. Clausura and Apertura winners contest a Super Final for the annual crown. Games are held at venues like the National Stadium in Managua and Juan Gomez in Esteli, following FIFA U-19 rules.
