The Dutch Championship Division 2 U21 (Divisie 2 U21) is the second-tier youth league in the Netherlands for players under 21, organized by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB). Featuring reserve teams from Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie clubs like Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord, it embodies the Dutch total football philosophy emphasizing attacking play and technical skill. In the 2023/24 season, 18 teams compete, nurturing talents for senior squads and national teams.

History and foundation

Evolving from a 2017 KNVB restructuring of youth competitions, Divisie 2 U21 replaced the old Tweede Divisie format to boost rivalry among elite academies. A notable event was the 2020 pandemic-shortened season, yet it saw Jorrel Hato (Ajax) shine before first-team breakthrough. Feyenoord U21 claimed the title in 2019, PSV dominated 2022, consistently feeding players to pro levels and international duty.

Tournament format

The format features a 34-match single round-robin group stage (home and away). Top teams advance to playoffs for promotion to Divisie 1 U21, crowning the champion. Bottom sides face relegation risks. Matches occur on academy grounds with limits on overage players (max 3 over 21). Season runs August to May with a winter break.
