The Eredivisie, officially known as the Beloften Eredivisie sponsored by Beloft, is the top-tier professional football league in the Netherlands. Featuring 18 teams, it runs from August to May, renowned for its high-octane, attacking football and as a breeding ground for global talents.

History and foundation

Founded in 1956, the Eredivisie rose to prominence in the 1970s with Ajax's three consecutive European Cups under Johan Cruyff's total football philosophy. Feyenoord won the 1970 European Cup, PSV triumphed in 1988. Notable events include the 2019-20 early termination due to COVID-19, denying Ajax the title. The league's rebranding to Belofte Eredivisie in 2022 highlights its commercial evolution amid fierce rivalries like De Klassieker (Feyenoord vs Ajax).

Tournament format

Standard double round-robin format with 34 matches per team. The champion qualifies for the Champions League group stage, runners-up for qualifiers, third and cup winners for Europa/Conference League. Bottom two teams relegate directly; 16th and 17th enter promotion/relegation playoffs with Eerste Divisie sides. Post-season playoffs decide extra European spots.
