The Dutch U21 Championship, often referred to as Eerste Divisie U21 or Tweede Divisie U21, is a cornerstone in nurturing Holland's football prodigies. Overseen by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), it features youth squads from Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie clubs. This competition provides young players with near-professional exposure, honing skills under the watchful eyes of scouts and coaches from across Europe.

History and foundation

Launched in the 1990s as part of academy development, it evolved from regional leagues into a national powerhouse. A 2016 overhaul split teams into divisions by strength, boosting rivalry. Fun facts: Frenkie de Jong debuted here for Ajax U21, scoring in a heated Feyenoord derby. The 2020 pandemic shortened a season, but it bounced back with updated rules. Tournament format

The season pits 18-20 teams in two groups of 9-10. Round-robin home-and-away within groups, followed by playoffs for top-4 from each. Matches are 90 minutes, with a cap of five over-21 field players. Eredivisie clubs must field at least six U21s. Runs August to May, with a winter break.
