History and foundation
Launched in the 1990s amid post-Soviet reforms, the league evolved under the Mongolian Football Federation (MFF), established in 1998. Early tournaments built the foundation for Mongolian soccer infrastructure. Notably, the 2010s saw a boom with investments in venues like the MFF Football Center in Ulaanbaatar. In 2019, 'Sporting Ulaanbaatar' shocked by promoting to the top flight. COVID-19 shortened the 2020 season, but it rebounded in 2021 with safety protocols. 'Khoromkhon' holds the record for most promotions.
Tournament format
The format involves 8–10 teams in a double round-robin, with playoffs. The champion promotes directly to the Premier League; second place enters promotion/relegation playoffs. The season runs April to October due to harsh winters. Games use artificial turf; VAR was introduced for finals in 2023.
