Mongolian Championship
The Mongolian Championship, or Mongolian Premier League, is the top tier of football in Mongolia. It features elite clubs vying for national supremacy and spots in continental competitions, embodying the nation's emerging football passion amid its vast steppes and nomadic heritage.
History and foundation
Established in 1996 amid post-Soviet reforms, the league evolved from amateur roots. Khaan Khuns-Erchim dominated the 2000s with eight straight titles. A milestone came in 2015 when SP Falcons broke the streak, followed by Athletic 220's shock win in 2021. Harsh winters and funding woes have tested resilience, but the Football Federation of Mongolia invests in pitches and youth academies.
Tournament format
Ten teams compete in a double round-robin (18 matches each), with top four advancing to playoffs for the crown. Bottom sides face relegation to the Second League. Played May-October to dodge freezes, champions qualify for AFC Cup and AFC Champions League Two.
Interesting facts
