The Premier Division of the Malaysia Championship, officially the Malaysia Super League, is the top tier of Malaysian professional football. Since 2004, it has featured 12–14 clubs battling for the title and AFC Champions League spots. The league showcases a mix of local talents, Southeast Asian imports, and occasional European or African stars, with matches on venues like Bukit Jalil National Stadium drawing passionate crowds.

History and foundation

Rooted in the Malaysia Cup launched in 1921—the region's first organized tournament—the Premier Division formalized in 1982, adopting its current structure in 2004. Selangor FC leads with 33 historical titles, but Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) has dominated recently, clinching 10 straight titles through 2023. A pivotal event was the 2015 match-fixing scandal, prompting sweeping reforms. The 2021 COVID-shortened season still saw JDT triumph.

Tournament format

Comprising 12 teams, the format features a double round-robin (22 matches), followed by a top-3 super phase and bottom survival playoffs. The champion qualifies for the AFC Champions League group stage, runners-up for qualifiers. Foreign player limits: 5 starters + 3 subs. Season runs February to October, pausing for monsoons.
