The Malaysia Championship, known as FAM League (Liga FAM), stands as the nation's premier second-tier football competition. Overseen by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), it acts as a vital stepping stone for clubs aspiring to the elite Super League. Seasons brim with intensity, as fans pack modest venues, fueling an electric atmosphere. The league blends homegrown talent with select foreigners, crafting a distinctive Malaysian flair marked by pace, flair, and relentless pressing.

History and foundation

Rooted in the 1970s, FAM League evolved from a third division into Malaysia's robust second tier. The 1980s saw dominance by clubs like ATM FA and Police FA, clinching titles and promotions amid surging popularity. A highlight was the 1994/95 season when Perak FA II's surprise championship sparked nationwide excitement. The 2000s brought financial woes, but FAM's 2015 reforms — including foreigner caps and infrastructure upgrades — revitalized it. Notably, in 2019, Kuching City FC from Sarawak drew a record 15,000 fans to a decisive clash. Today, it remains a talent factory for Super League and the national team.

Tournament format

Featuring 14 teams in a double round-robin format, each plays 26 matches home and away. The champion earns direct Super League promotion; positions 2-5 vie in playoffs for another spot. Bottom two face relegation to Liga 3, with a survival playoff. Running February to October, it pauses for monsoons. FAM mandates at least eight locals in the starting XI, prioritizing domestic development.
