Latvian Cup

Latvian Cup logo
The Latvian Cup is the premier knockout football competition in Latvia, run by the Latvian Football Federation (LFF). It features clubs from the top-tier Virslīga, First League, and amateur sides, creating opportunities for underdogs to shine. Established in 1923, it complements the league season with high-stakes drama.

History and foundation

Dating back to 1923 as the Latvian Football Association Cup, it evolved into the Latvian SSR Cup during Soviet times, dominated by Riga powerhouses like Daugava and Riga. Post-1991 independence, it was revived nationally. Highlights include Skonto's 1992 inaugural post-Soviet win and Jūrmala's 2010 upset. The 2020 pandemic led to a condensed format, won by Riga FC. Over a century, more than 100 editions have been held, with Skonto claiming 12 titles.

Tournament format

Single-elimination format with one-off ties from the round of 32. Up to 64 teams qualify: pros from Virslīga/1. līga and regional winners. Starts in April-May, final in November at Skonto Stadium, Riga. No seeding means top teams face early risks. 2023/24 saw 48 entrants with extra time/penalties for draws.
