The Latvian Second League Championship is a pivotal second-tier competition in Latvia's football pyramid, featuring ambitious regional clubs battling for promotion to the Virslīga. In the 2024 season, 10 teams like FK Auda-2, RFS-2, and Skanstes FC compete fiercely, blending youth academies with seasoned pros to chase glory.

History and foundation

Established post-2007 reforms by the Latvian Football Federation (LFF), the Second League evolved from earlier First League formats. Since 2018, it's distinctly tiered below the 1. Liga. A quirky highlight: the 2020 pandemic-shortened season saw FK Ogre United crowned champions, surging upward. Notably, Valmiera Glass VIA's 2015 ascent from this league laid foundations for their Virslīga title. Another gem — a 2019 12:0 thrashing of Super Nova by JDFS Alberts set a goal record.

Tournament format

The format is straightforward: 10 teams play a double round-robin, totaling 36 matches each. Top finisher promotes directly to 1. Liga; second place enters playoffs against the 1. Liga's penultimate team. Bottom two drop to Third League. Running April to November, it adapts to Baltic weather, with a 2024 rule capping foreign players at three per match to nurture local talent.

Interesting facts

Scoring is prolific, averaging 3.2 goals per game, making it a spectator's delight in the Baltics. 2023 top scorer: Dinko Siladi (FK Auda-2) with 22 goals, a long-range specialist. Standouts include Richards Ozolinsh, now Latvia international from league roots, and Marko Vusipovic, who netted 45 in three seasons for JDFS Alberts. Current buzz: 19-year-old Rains from RFS-2 with 15 strikes already.
