History and foundation
Launched in 2020 to replace the longstanding L. League (1989-2020), the WE League emerged post Japan's youth World Cup win and Olympic bronze. Urawa Red Diamonds claimed the inaugural title dominantly. A milestone: the 1000th goal in 2022 highlighted its momentum. Despite COVID disruptions, digital broadcasts expanded its reach significantly.
Tournament format
The season runs September to February with a double round-robin format: 22 matches per team, home and away. The top finisher is champion; 2nd and 3rd qualify for the AFC Champions League. No relegation exists, but a league cup features playoffs. Games on artificial turf promote fluid, high-tempo play.
