The Iranian Championship, known as Azadegan League or Pro League, stands as the top tier of Iranian football. Launched in 1973, it crowns the nation's champion by pitting elite clubs against each other, blending Persian football heritage with AFC standards and captivating millions of fans domestically and abroad.

History and foundation

Initiated in 1973 as Takht Jam League, it endured renaming and restructuring post-1979 Islamic Revolution. Azadegan League professionalized in 2001, with Persian Gulf Pro League running from 2006 to 2022. Esteghlal claimed the inaugural title, while Tractor Sazi triumphed last in 2022/23. Notably, Persepolis and Esteghlal monopolized 1990s titles, and Sepahan dominated the 2010s with five wins. The league has launched stars to Asian and European stages.

Tournament format

Featuring 16 teams, the season spans 30 matches per side in a double round-robin. Top two qualify for AFC Champions League, bottom two drop to the second division, with playoffs for mid-table survival. Recent rules emphasize financial fair play and foreigner limits.
