Iranian Championship. Division 1
The Iranian Football Championship Division 1, commonly known as Azadegan League, is the second tier of Iran's football league system. Featuring 20 teams, it serves as a battleground for promotion to the Persian Gulf Pro League and survival against relegation to League 2. This division acts as a crucial breeding ground for emerging talents and ambitious clubs, with intense competition for two direct promotion spots and additional playoff opportunities. The season runs from August to May, comprising 38 rounds in a double round-robin format.
History and foundation
Established in 2001 following a major reorganization of Iranian football into a professional structure, the Azadegan League was previously called the Persian League 1. Over the years, it has witnessed scandals, including corruption probes in the 2010s, but also remarkable success stories. Notably, Shahr-e Khodro from Khorramabad topped the table in 2022, earning promotion with a record points haul. An intriguing fact: historic clubs like Payam Mashhad have repeatedly bounced back from lower divisions, showcasing resilience in Iranian football's pyramid.
Tournament format
The league format pits 20 teams against each other twice—home and away—for a total of 38 matches. The champion and runner-up secure direct promotion to the Pro League. Third and fourth-placed teams enter playoffs against bottom Pro League sides for extra spots. The bottom three are relegated to the Second Division. Tiebreakers include goal difference, head-to-head results, and away goals.
