The Toulon Tournament, officially the Maurice Revello Tournament, is a prestigious annual youth football competition held in Toulon, France, featuring top Under-21 national teams (formerly U-20). Launched in 1967, it serves as a crucial showcase for emerging talents destined for professional stardom, blending fierce competition with the charm of the French Riviera.

History and foundation

Initiated in 1967 by Maurice Revello, president of Toulon’s Sporting Union club, the first edition was won by Yugoslavia. Over decades, it has spotlighted future icons like Zinedine Zidane (France, 1991), Thierry Henry (1996), Steve McManaman (England, 1991), Kylian Mbappé (2019), and Erling Haaland (Norway, 2018). Interrupted briefly in 1970, 1971, 1989, and 2020 due to COVID-19, France tops the roll of honour with 11 titles, followed by Brazil (5). Japan triumphed in 2023.

Typically featuring 8–10 U-21 national teams divided into two groups, teams play a round-robin format. The top two from each group advance to semifinals, with winners contesting the final and losers the third-place match. Hosted over 10 days in late May to early June on venues like Stade de Lattre-de-Tassigny and Mayol Stadium.
