France's Regional Leagues (Championnat National 3, formerly CFA 2) form the fifth tier of French football. This decentralized setup features 12 regional groups where semi-professional and amateur clubs compete. They act as a vital springboard for provincial talents aiming for National 2 promotion.

History and foundation

The regional system took shape in the 1970s amid French football reforms. Originally Division d'Honneur, it became CFA 2 in 2017 and National 3 in 2020. Notable: Clubs like Red Star and Gazélec Ajaccio rose from here; in the 1990s, Strasbourg tested youth via reserves. Toulon holds multiple titles from the 1980s. The leagues endured challenges like the 2020 pandemic suspensions.

Tournament format

12 groups of 12–14 teams play a double round-robin. Group winners enter playoffs for 4 National 2 spots; runners-up fight in qualifiers. Bottom 3–4 per group face relegation to Division Régionale Honneur. Season runs August to May, 20–26 matches.
