Indonesia's Liga 3 is the third tier of professional football in the nation, featuring ambitious clubs from remote provinces and islands of the archipelago. It blends the passion of street football with organized competition for promotion, mirroring the diversity of Indonesian society.

History and foundation

Liga 3 was officially launched in 2014 as part of a football system reform to give regional teams a shot at higher divisions. Prior to that, similar tournaments existed as amateur leagues under regional associations. A pivotal moment was the COVID-19 pandemic halting the 2020 season, but it revived in 2023 with a fresh format. Fun fact: In 2019, Persita Tangerang from East Java sensationally won, defeating favorites in a dramatic final. The league often serves as a breeding ground for young talents who later debut in Liga 1.

Tournament format

The competition is divided into regional groups — Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Eastern Islands — to cut travel costs. Each group plays a round-robin, with top teams advancing to playoffs. Zone winners vie for the overall title and promotion to Liga 2. Seasons feature 40–50 teams, matches on local stadiums holding 5,000 to 20,000 fans.

Interesting facts
