Indonesia. League 1 U-20
Indonesia's Liga 1 U-20 is the premier national youth competition organized by the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI), designed to nurture the next generation of football stars. Featuring top clubs' under-20 squads, it provides young talents with professional-level exposure, bridging the gap to senior Liga 1 and the national team under seasoned coaching staff.
History and foundation
Launched in 2008 amid efforts to bolster Indonesian youth football, inspired by regional rivals like Vietnam and Thailand, the league saw Persija Jakarta claim the inaugural title. Reforms in the 2010s, including playoffs in 2014, boosted excitement. The 2019/20 season was halted by COVID-19 but resumed with standouts like Arkha Jay and Erfan Zuhri shining. Notably, in 2022, Bali United U-20 reached a cup final, stunning senior sides in friendlies, while alumni have featured in ASEAN U-19 championships.
Tournament format
The season pits 18 teams in two groups of nine. Each plays rivals in their group home and away (16 matches total). Top four per group advance to playoffs: quarterfinals, semifinals, and a neutral-site final. Winners earn ASEAN youth spots and national honors. Standard scoring applies: 3 points for wins, 1 for draws. Fixtures run August to May, navigating monsoon disruptions.
