The Guwahati Premier League (GPL) is a vibrant regional football competition in India's Assam state, centered in Guwahati. It brings together top local clubs, boosting football's growth in Northeast India and nurturing young talents while improving infrastructure and drawing national scouts.

History and foundation

Launched in 2017 by the Assam Football Association, the inaugural season was clinched by Gauhati Town Club. A 2019 match-fixing scandal prompted reforms like video reviews. COVID-19 halted 2020 play, but 2021 saw record crowds. The 2022 final thrilled fans with North East United Academy edging out rivals 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw.

Tournament format

Running September to December, the league features 8 teams in a double round-robin (14 matches each). Top 4 advance to playoffs: semifinals and final at neutral venues like Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium (25,000 capacity) and Nehru Stadium. Fair play rules include penalties for rough conduct.

Interesting facts

Average goals per match stand at 2.8, favoring fast counterattacks. Top scorers include Nabin Rabha (18 goals, 2022, Gauhati Town Club) and Deepak Rabha (22 in 2021).
