The India U20 Championship (AIFF Youth League U20) is the premier national competition organized by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to spotlight India's brightest young football talents under 20. Featuring top youth squads from Indian Super League (ISL) and I-League academies alongside regional powerhouses, it serves as a vital breeding ground for future stars destined for senior national teams and pro leagues, reflecting India's burgeoning focus on youth development.

History and foundation

Launched in 2018 amid AIFF's football modernization drive, the championship evolved from regional qualifiers to a full national event by 2020. A highlight was Bengaluru FC U20's 2022 triumph, propelling midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad to ISL stardom. The tournament adapted to COVID-19 by centralizing in Goa, ensuring continuity. Northeastern states like Mizoram and Manipur have shone, their teams dominating early editions due to robust local grassroots programs.

Tournament format

The structure kicks off with a preliminary phase involving 12–16 teams split into zones (North, South, East, West). Zonal winners and top performers advance to a final stage: a round-robin or playoff mini-tournament with 4–6 teams. Matches follow standard 90-minute formats with extra time for deciders. Running from October to March, it emphasizes squad rotation to manage player workload.
