Hungary U19 Regional League
The Hungary U19 Regional League is a cornerstone of the nation's youth football pyramid, where promising talents from across regions battle for supremacy and career advancement. It features squads from professional club academies and standalone youth setups, emphasizing skill refinement under seasoned coaching to bridge the gap to senior football.
History and foundation
Established in the early 2000s amid Hungary's youth football overhaul, the league expanded in the 2010s to boost regional balance. A standout season was 2018/19, with Budapest's Ferencváros U19 clinching the title by 15 points. Notably, stars like Dominik Szoboszlai emerged from similar systems, starting at Liefering before shining at Liverpool. A 2021 doping incident highlighted the league's commitment to integrity in youth development.
Tournament format
The competition adopts a round-robin format within regional groups of 10-14 teams, playing home-and-away fixtures. Group winners advance to a national U19 playoff for the championship, while bottom teams face relegation. Running from August to May with a winter break, teams play 26-30 matches each.
