The Hungarian Third Division Championship (NB III) stands as a vital tier in Hungary's football pyramid, featuring ambitious regional clubs hungry for promotion. It nurtures emerging talents and sustains grassroots passion in smaller towns, where matches draw fervent local crowds. In the 2023/24 season, 20 teams compete in two groups of 10, fueling intense battles for ascent to higher leagues.

History and foundation

NB III traces its roots to the 1990s post-communist reforms, evolving from scattered regional leagues into a structured third tier. A pivotal reorganization came in 2005, splitting it into groups. Notably, clubs like Videoton (now MOL Fehérvár FC) launched their elite rises from here in the 2010s. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic shortened a season, yet the league rebounded swiftly, showcasing resilience. Hundreds of players have graduated to Hungary's top flight through this competitive crucible.

Tournament format

The format is engaging: 20 teams in Western and Eastern groups, each playing 26 round-robin matches home and away. Group winners earn direct promotion to NB II, with 2nd-3rd placers entering playoffs. Bottom three or four per group face relegation to the Fourth Division. Inter-group transitions and tiebreakers—goal difference, head-to-head—heighten drama.
