The Hong Kong Premier League U22 is a vibrant competition fostering young talents in Asian football. Featuring top clubs like Eastern Sports Club, Kitchee SC, and Southern District, it provides a professional stage for under-22 players. The season runs from September to May, encompassing a regular season and playoffs for the championship title. More than a youth tournament, it's a vital talent pipeline for Hong Kong's top flight and national team.

History and foundation

Launched in 2014 amid Hong Kong Football Association's youth development reforms, the league aimed to boost competition and player quality. Early dominance came from Kitchee juniors, securing multiple titles. The 2018/19 season highlighted Eastern AA's cup final run, clinching victory with a 93rd-minute goal. Despite COVID-19 disruptions, it resumed in 2021 with enhanced protocols. Notably, players like Li Ngai-ho have progressed from here to China's A-League.

Tournament format

Comprising 10-12 teams, it follows a double round-robin format—home and away matches, totaling 22-26 rounds. Top 4 advance to playoffs: semifinals and final. Cup events like the Junior Challenge Shield add variety. Matches occur on semi-pro venues such as Mong Kok Stadium. Age rule: players under 22 as of January 1, with up to 3-4 overage pros allowed for balance.
