Launched in the 1980s amid the global growth of women's soccer, the first edition kicked off in 1984. Eastern Sports Club dominated the 1990s with five straight titles. A memorable 2010 final saw Kitchee Women triumph in a penalty shootout. Chinese investments from 2015 boosted quality with mainland players. Notably, the 2020 edition was canceled due to the pandemic, but it returned in 2022 with record crowds.

Tournament format

Pure knockout format: single-elimination from round of 16 to final, involving 8–12 teams from top and second divisions. Held mostly in autumn, culminating in a spring final. Draws go to extra time and penalties, ensuring edge-of-your-seat drama where upsets are common.
