The Hong Kong League Cup is a prestigious knockout tournament run by the Hong Kong Football Association, featuring top clubs from the Premier League. Launched in 2014, it has become a staple of the local football calendar, delivering thrilling matches packed with drama and upsets that highlight the competitive depth of Asian football.

History and foundation

Introduced in the 2014/15 season as a complement to the FA Cup, the League Cup aimed to enrich Hong Kong's football landscape. Early dominance came from Yuen Long and Kitchee, but the 2017/18 final stood out as Kitchee edged Yuen Long 3-2 with a stoppage-time winner. Notably, the 2020 edition was scrapped due to COVID-19, yet it rebounded strongly; in 2022, Lee Man reached the semis, proving the knockout format's magic in leveling the playing field.

Tournament format

It's a pure knockout setup: 8-10 Premier League teams split into two groups of 4-5, playing a single round-robin. Group winners and best runners-up advance to quarterfinals, followed by semis and a neutral-venue final. Single-leg ties with extra time and penalties ensure high stakes in every clash.

Interesting facts

Average goals per match hover at 3.2, favoring swift counters and set pieces. Top scorers include Fernando (15 for Kitchee in 2019/20), Everton Camargo (12 for Eastern), and local star Jeffrey Chu (10). Standout players: Brazilians Angelo and Geraldo with mesmerizing dribbles, plus keeper Yao 'The Wall,' who boasted an 85% save rate in 2023/24. The cup has launched careers, like young William's move to the J-League.
