The French Youth Championship, officially Championnat National U19, is the premier youth football competition in France, featuring top academy sides from professional clubs. It focuses on nurturing talent through rigorous training and competitive matches, bridging the gap to senior professional football with emphasis on skill development and tactical awareness.

History and foundation

Launched in 2009 amid youth football reforms, it unified regional setups into a national framework. Stars like Kylian Mbappé (Monaco academy) and Eduardo Camavinga (Rennes) emerged from here. The 2015/16 season saw Lyon clinch the title with a 12-point lead, while Toulouse triumphed in the disrupted 2020 campaign. A fun fact: the league has produced over 500 pros in Ligue 1 since inception, highlighting its role as France's talent factory.

Tournament format

Comprising 14 teams, the format includes a 26-match double round-robin, followed by playoffs. Winners qualify for UEFA Youth League U19 spots, with the bottom two relegated to the second-tier National U19 group. Summer playoffs allow promotion/relegation movements.
