The Danish Second Division (2. Division) is the third tier of Danish football, where ambitious clubs battle for promotion to the First Division and a shot at professional status. It blends gritty survival fights with dreams of glory, drawing scouts and fans who appreciate raw, authentic soccer.

History and foundation

Established in 2015 amid a Danish football restructure, the Second Division replaced the old framework as the third level following the First Division's introduction as tier two. Fun fact: In 2019, Esbjerg fB, relegated from the Superliga, stormed back via this league. The 2021/22 season saw Hvidovre IF clinch the title and rise to the First Division, eventually reaching the top flight. The league endured COVID-19 disruptions with shortened schedules but maintained fierce competition.

Tournament format

The format features 12 teams playing a double round-robin: 33 matches total. Top teams (usually first and second) earn direct promotion or playoff spots against First Division sides. Bottom two (11th and 12th) relegate to the 3. Division, while 9th and 10th face relegation playoffs. Summer and winter transitions add drama with promotion/relegation battles.

Interesting facts

Average goals per match in 2022/23 hovered at 3.2, making it more attacking than higher tiers. Top scorers include Mathias Mattsson with 25 goals in 2018/19 for Hillerød FGI. Standout players: Simon Hedstrøm (now Superliga), who honed his skills here; youth prospects like Ola Nicklas from Nykøbing FC, now elite-bound. It's a talent hotbed, birthplace for stars like Kasper Dolberg early on. In 2023, Jesper Schøltz led with 22 for Fremad Amager. (Total: 1923 characters)
