The Czech Republic's Second League, known as FNL (Fotbalová národní liga), serves as the vital bridge between amateur and elite professional football. Featuring 16 competitive teams like Dukla Prague, Vysočina Jihlava, and Taborsko, it delivers gritty, tactical battles where ambition meets resilience in the pursuit of top-flight promotion.

History and foundation

Established in 1993 post-Velvet Revolution and Czechoslovakia's dissolution, the Second League evolved from its predecessor. Renamed Fortuna:Národní liga in 2014 due to sponsorship, it has seen pivotal moments: Dukla Prague's resurgence in the 2010s, a COVID-disrupted 2020 season adding edge, and frequent talent pipelines to the First League, with clubs like Sigma Olomouc B dominating eras.

Tournament format

The league operates a double round-robin format with 16 teams playing 30 matches each. Top two teams earn direct promotion to the Czech First League; third enters playoffs against the 14th-placed top-flight side. Bottom team relegates to the Third Division, 15th faces playoffs. Season runs August to May with a winter break; VAR introduced in 2022 enhances officiating.
