The Third Division of the Croatian Championship (3. HNL) is a vital tier in Croatia's football pyramid, bringing together clubs from across the nation. It serves as a breeding ground for emerging talents and a battleground for amateur sides aiming to climb the ranks, embodying the passion of regional football with its fierce local rivalries and dedicated fanbases.

History and foundation

Established in 1992 following Croatia's independence, 3. HNL evolved from the old Yugoslav structures under the Croatian Football Federation (HNS). Initially known as 3. liga, it underwent significant reforms in the 2010s, splitting into West and East groups. Notable moments include KNKC Cres's 2023 title win and Sloga Doboja's surprising ascent. Play-offs have often delivered drama, with island teams from Hvar or Korčula challenging mainland powerhouses, highlighting the league's diversity.

Tournament format

The season features two groups of 12–14 teams each: Southwest and Northeast. Teams play a double round-robin (22–26 matches), with group winners advancing to promotion playoffs against 2. NL sides for a spot in the Second Division. Bottom teams face relegation to the fourth tier. Running from August to June with a winter break, the 2023/24 edition had 24 clubs emphasizing youth development.

Interesting facts

Standout alumni: Mateo Livak, now at Dinamo Zagreb, and Ivica Milić with over 150 career goals in lower leagues. The division excels at nurturing provincial strikers and midfielders like Nikola Krstajić, who moved to Europe.
