The Croatian First Football League, or Hrvatska nogometna liga (HNL), is the top tier of professional football in Croatia. Featuring 10 competitive teams, it serves as the battleground for the national title, European qualification spots, and relegation avoidance. Since its inception in 1992 post-independence, Prva HNL has been a breeding ground for world-class talents who shine on global stages.

History and foundation

Launched in 1992 amid Yugoslavia's dissolution, the league crowned Dinamo Zagreb as its first champion, a team that has since claimed 18 titles by 2024. A notable upset came in 1998 when Hajduk Split broke Dinamo's dominance. The competition has navigated financial woes and format changes, settling on 10 teams in 2016. Dinamo's 2011 Champions League quarter-final run, falling to Real Madrid, remains a highlight, showcasing Croatian football's potential.

Tournament format

The season follows a double round-robin format with 36 matches per team (four games against each opponent). Standings determine the champion and European berths: 1st goes to Champions League qualifiers, 2nd and 3rd to Europa League or Conference League. The bottom two face playoffs against First League sides for survival.
