Croatia's Second League, or Prva NL, is the vital tier below the elite HNL, featuring driven clubs hungry for promotion and nurturing Croatia's next generation of football talent.

History and foundation

Launched in 1992 post-Yugoslavia breakup as Druga HNL, it hosted regional sides like those from Sisak, Zadar, and Vukovar early on. Reforms in the 2010s included playoffs in 2016 and renaming to Prva NL in 2022 with expansion to 12 teams. Highlights: Orient's 2022 promotion and instant Croatian Cup win; Lokomotiva Zagreb's gripping 2021 playoff triumph.

Tournament format

A 12-team double round-robin yields 33 matches. Top two promote directly to HNL, third enters playoffs against HNL's 10th. Bottom two drop to the third tier, with summer reshuffles.
