History and foundation
Launched in 1992 post-independence from Yugoslavia, the league endured war disruptions but flourished by the mid-90s. A 2015 match-fixing scandal prompted strict reforms.
Tournament format
Twelve teams contest a double round-robin (22 matches), with top four advancing to playoffs: semis and final. Season spans August to May with winter break. Priority to HNL club academies, others via regional qualifiers. Games on intimate academy grounds holding 1,000-5,000 fans.
