Bulgarian Championship. Regional League logo
The Bulgarian Regional League stands as the third tier of Bulgarian football, featuring semi-professional and amateur clubs from across the country's regions. It bridges the gap between grassroots amateur play and the professional Second League, giving teams a real shot at climbing the pyramid. In areas far from the capital's spotlight, this competition fuels local football passion with gritty determination.

History and foundation

Emerging in the 1950s amid post-WWII restructuring, it was initially the Third Division with zonal setups. The 2000s brought reform, splitting into East and West Groups for sharper rivalry. A standout story: Levski 1922 from Sofia rocketed from Regional to First League in two years back in 2012. Another gem — Botev Vratsa dominated its zone in the 1990s, earning promotion and solidifying its pro status.

Tournament format

Running August to May, the league splits into East (16 teams) and West (16 teams) groups. Each plays a double round-robin: 30 matches total. Group winners promote directly to Second League; runners-up battle in playoffs for an extra spot. Bottom teams face relegation to Fourth Division, with barrages against lower-tier sides adding edge.
