History and foundation
Established in 1924 as the National Football Division, the league evolved through amateur roots to professional status in 1948. CSKA Sofia dominated with 31 titles, followed by Levski Sofia's 26. Post-1991, PFC Levski and Ludogorets 1916 rose to prominence. A highlight was Ludogorets' stunning 2014 Champions League run, defeating Manchester City. The 2020 season faced COVID disruptions but adapted swiftly.
Tournament format
Running from July to May, the 16 teams play a double round-robin format for 30 matches. Top teams secure Champions League and Europa League berths, with playoffs for additional spots. The bottom 10 split into championship and relegation groups, heightening drama until the final whistle.
