The Austrian Regionalliga stands as the third tier of Austrian football, featuring 48 clubs across nine regional conferences. It bridges amateur and professional levels, where teams from diverse regions compete fiercely for promotion to the 2. Liga and survival amid intense rivalry. This league captures the essence of Austrian football's variety, from alpine provinces to Vienna suburbs, delivering dynamic, talent-driven matches.

History and foundation

Established in the 1990s amid structural reforms, the Regionalliga expanded to 48 teams in 2014 for greater competition. Notable moments include Austria Lustenau's stunning rise to the Bundesliga in 2022 and the 2019 match-fixing scandal in the East conference, prompting stricter oversight. Historically, it launched careers like Martin Hinteregger's with Sturm Graz II.

Tournament format

Divided into nine conferences (East, Central East, Mid, etc.) with 6-8 teams each, clubs play a double round-robin (home and away), totaling 22-30 matches. Conference winners and playoff top performers vie for two 2. Liga spots. Bottom teams face relegation to Landesliga. The season runs July to June, with a winter break.
