The Australia U21 Championship (National Premier Leagues Youth U21 or Foxtel National Youth Championships) is a premier national competition for players under 21. It acts as a vital development pathway for talents from A-League and NPL clubs, competing for the title of Australia's top youth team. The tournament bridges youth and professional football, showcasing hundreds of promising players nationwide.

History and foundation

Evolving from regional leagues, it gained national status in the 2010s. Originating as the Foxtel National Youth League in 2008 alongside the A-League, it saw reforms by Football Australia in 2020 integrating it into the NPL structure. A highlight was Western Sydney Wanderers U21's 5-0 final win over Adelaide United in 2019. Early years featured match-fixing scandals prompting stricter oversight. It adapted to COVID-19 with online streams and has become a talent factory for A-League stars.

Tournament format

The format features a regular season with 12-14 teams from A-League and top NPL clubs in a home-and-away round-robin. Top 4 advance to playoffs: semi-finals and grand final on neutral ground. The season runs August to May with a winter break. Regional mini-tournaments were added in 2023 for qualification.
