The A-League is Australia's premier professional football competition, featuring top clubs from Australia and New Zealand. Launched in 2005, it has elevated domestic football with its fast-paced, attacking style, drawing global talents and fostering a passionate fanbase.

History and foundation

Replacing the National Soccer League (1977-2004), the A-League kicked off on August 26, 2005, with eight teams; Sydney FC claimed the inaugural title. Expansion in the 2010s added Western Sydney Wanderers in 2012, sparking the intense 'Western Sydney Derby'. By 2021, a second tier, the Australia National Premier League, was introduced. The league endured COVID-19 disruptions but maintained viewership. Sydney FC leads with five championships.

Tournament format

The season features 12 teams (expanding to 13 in 2023/24) playing 26 regular-season matches each (home and away). The top six advance to playoffs: quarterfinals, semifinals, and Grand Final. Winners qualify for the AFC Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup. Runs October to May with a Christmas break.
