History and foundation

Launched in 1989 as the Republic Supercup, the inaugural match saw Partizani Tirana edge Dinamo Tirana 1-0. The 1990s and early 2000s saw interruptions due to financial woes and league restructurings. It was revived in 2000 and became annual from 2004. A notable controversy erupted in 2010 during Dinamo Tirana vs. Tirana, leading to a referee ban. Partizani holds the record with 7 wins, while Skënderbeu Korçë has triumphed thrice in thrilling encounters.

Tournament format

The format is a single knockout match on a neutral venue, typically Arena e Re in Tirana (21,000 capacity). Played over 90 minutes, it goes to extra time (2x15 mins) and penalties if tied. Held in August, it energizes the season. The FAFS has varied locations lately to boost regional engagement.
