The Thien Long Tournament is Vietnam's premier national cup competition, annually pitting the country's top clubs against each other in a quest for glory. Organized by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), it serves as a vital stage for discovering elite teams and witnessing upsets from lower-division sides. Fans are drawn to its high stakes, intense matches often decided in extra time or penalty shootouts.

History and foundation

Launched in 1992 as the Emperor's Cup, Thien Long has a rich history of fostering Vietnamese football. Song Huyen Ho Chi Minh claimed the inaugural title, setting a benchmark. The 2000s saw dominance by Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City clubs, but underdog stories shine, like Sen Vong Thanh's 2011 triumph. The 2019 Hanoi vs. Nam Dinh final drew a record 20,000 spectators. Reforms in 2016 elevated its status in Vietnam's football pyramid.

Tournament format

Employing a knockout format, the tournament features around 30 teams from V.League 1 and lower tiers. It kicks off in February with the round of 16, progressing through eighth-finals, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a May-June final on neutral grounds. Single-leg ties with extra time and penalties ensure edge-of-seat drama; unseeded draws amplify unpredictability.
