Originating in the 1950s as student games, the U21 format solidified in the 2000s. A landmark was 2013, when Hanoi University of Sport triumphed 3-1 over Ho Chi Minh City rivals in the final, ushering in Hanoi dominance. The 2019 Danang edition featured a record 16 teams, while COVID-19 delayed the 2021 event. Notably, a 2017 Hue goalkeeper's penalty save in the final went viral, amassing millions of views and inspiring a new generation across Vietnam.

Tournament format

The tournament employs a group stage with 12-16 university teams divided into 3-4 groups of four. Group winners and top runners-up advance to quarterfinals, followed by semifinals and the final. Matches last 90 minutes, with extra time and penalties if needed. Held annually in October-November, it culminates on Hanoi's national stadium, totaling 30-40 games.
