Uganda Championship. Regional League
The Regional League of the Uganda Championship is a vital tier in the nation's football pyramid, featuring teams from Uganda's diverse regions. It acts as a gateway to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, the top flight. Clubs from eastern, western, northern, and central areas compete fiercely on modest pitches, where fan fervor outshines infrastructural limitations. In the 2023/24 season, around 16 teams vied for promotion spots, showcasing raw talent and regional rivalries.
History and foundation
Established in the 1960s post-independence, the Regional League aimed to decentralize football development. The 1980s turmoil under political unrest saw many fixtures canceled, but revival came in the 2000s via FUFA support. A highlight: Express B from Buganda shocked everyone by winning in 2012 and surviving three Premier League seasons. In 2018, a match-fixing scandal in the northern division prompted stricter FUFA oversight, transforming the league's integrity.
Tournament format
Divided into four zones (North, South, East, West), each with 8–12 teams playing single or double round-robin formats. Zonal winners and top play-off performers earn promotion. The season runs August to May, pausing for rains. VAR introduction in 2022 has improved refereeing accuracy.
