The Swedish Second Division, commonly known as Ettan, is the third tier of the Swedish football league system, positioned below Allsvenskan and Superettan. It features ambitious clubs hungry for promotion and serves as a breeding ground for young talents and seasoned pros. Matches are typically gritty, emphasizing physicality and tactical nous, making Ettan a forge for the resilient players who shape Swedish football's future.

History and foundation

Ettan Fotboll traces its roots to the 1920s with regional divisions, but its current structure emerged in 2005 following league reforms. A key change came in 2015 when Superettan became the clear second tier, relegating Ettan to third. Memorable moments include IK Sirius's stunning 2012 promotion from Ettan to Allsvenskan and Falkenbergs FF's rise. Notably, the 2020 season was shortened due to COVID-19, yet Degerfors IF still earned promotion. The league has undergone several reorganizations, including geographic groupings to cut travel costs.

Tournament format

The competition splits into two regional groups—Norra (North) and Södra (South)—each with 16 teams. The season runs from April to November, with each team playing home and away against rivals, totaling 30 matches. Group winners advance to promotion playoffs against the 2nd and 3rd-placed Superettan sides. Three teams per group relegate directly to Division 2, with two more facing relegation playoffs. This setup ensures edge-of-your-seat drama until the final whistle.

Interesting facts

Ettan averages 3.2-3.5 goals per game, higher than Superettan, thanks to its attacking flair. All-time top scorers include Alexander Falk (over 100 for Utsiktens BK) and Jamal Muminov (22 goals in 2023 for Täby FK). Standout players who've shone here: Emil Holm (now in Italy), Pontus Jansson early on, and Wilhelm Lopez, whose dribbles lit up United Nordic. It's a scout's paradise, launching stars like Theodor Hincke to bigger leagues.
