Swedish Women's Championship
The Swedish Women's Championship, or Damallsvenskan, is Sweden's top-tier women's club football league. Featuring 12 teams, it crowns the national champion, awards European spots, and determines promotion/relegation battles. Since 2009, sponsorship has boosted its profile amid rising interest in women's football.
History and foundation
Launched in 1988 as Damallsvenskan, it replaced a fragmented system. Malmö FF claimed the inaugural title. The 1990s saw dominance by Göteborg and Umeå sides. Umeå IK's unprecedented 11 straight titles from 2000-2010 define an era. Notably, Linköpings FC broke the streak in 2013. Reforms in 2013 slimmed it to 12 teams for better competition.
Tournament format
The season spans 26 matches in a double round-robin format. The champion secures the title and a UEFA Women's Champions League berth. Runner-up and cup winners enter qualifiers. Bottom two drop to Division 1; 11th plays playoffs. Play runs April to November with a summer break.
