The Pakistan Premier League (PPL) stands as the top tier of professional football in Pakistan, governed by the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF). Featuring the nation's elite clubs, it serves as a battleground for the national title and AFC competition spots. Amid cricket's dominance, PPL embodies football's emerging appeal, drawing passionate crowds and nurturing talent in a challenging landscape.

History and foundation

Launched in 2004 as the National Championship, the PPL took its current form in 2008 with WAPDA FC as inaugural winners. Disruptions marked its path: suspensions in 2015 due to PFF corruption and political unrest, plus a COVID-induced hiatus from 2019–2022. Revival came in 2021 with 20 teams. Notably, KRL FC's 2010 triumph featured a 22-point lead, a league record. Matches have occasionally required heavy security amid security threats.

Tournament format

The league employs a double round-robin format with 18–20 teams playing 34–38 matches each. The champion claims the title and AFC Champions League qualification, while bottom two sides face relegation to the PFF League. Seasons run August to May, with playoffs for top-4 teams introduced in 2023 for the Super Cup.
