The Nigeria Women's Cup is the premier national knockout competition for women's football clubs, sanctioned by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). It brings together top teams from across the nation in a thrilling quest for glory, highlighting the surge in women's football popularity on the African continent.

History and foundation

Launched in the late 1990s amid the rise of the Super Falcons national team, the tournament's inaugural edition was in 1998. It has since become an annual fixture. A standout moment was the 2015 final where Roban Oceans from Lagos triumphed 4-1, and in 2020, it persevered through COVID challenges. Notably, in 2012, an underdog from Abuja stunned favorites in a penalty shootout.

Tournament format

The format is pure knockout: regional qualifiers feed into the round of 16, followed by eighth-finals, quarterfinals, semifinals, and a neutral-venue final. Single-elimination matches without away goals rule heighten the drama. Around 64 teams compete each season, with champions needing at least 5-6 wins.

Interesting facts
