The Northern League Women is a regional division of New Zealand's National Women's League, featuring top clubs from Auckland and northern areas. Launched to elevate women's football, it serves as a competitive hub for talent development and regional supremacy within the national framework since 2021.

History and foundation

Debuting in 2021 amid a major restructuring of Kiwi women's soccer, the league replaced fragmented local competitions. Western Springs AFC claimed the inaugural title, setting a high bar. Eastern Suburbs triumphed in 2022, with Western Springs reclaiming it in 2023. A highlight: players like Maria Andrew from Suburbs earned spots in the Ferns for the 2023 World Cup. Pandemic-era adaptations kept the competition alive, drawing dedicated crowds.

Tournament format

Ten teams play a double round-robin: home and away, totaling 18 matches each. The winner advances to the NRFL Women’s National Championship playoff for the national crown. Points: 3 for wins, 1 for draws; ties broken by goal difference and head-to-head. Season runs March to September, with a mid-year break.
