History and foundation

Launched in 2004 as the National Women's League, it rebranded to Mainland Championship in 2017 with sponsorship from Mainland. Highlights include the 2020 COVID interruption and Eastern Suburbs' 2022 title win over Auckland United in a thrilling final. Notably, players from this league starred for the Ferns at the 2023 Women's World Cup, reaching the round of 16.

Tournament format

Featuring 10 teams, the format consists of a regular season with home-and-away double round-robin (18 matches), followed by playoffs where the top 4 advance to semifinals and a grand final. The season runs from August to December, highlighted by fierce Auckland-Christchurch rivalries.
