The Moldova Federation Cup is a prominent national knockout competition run by the Football Association of Moldova (FAM). It complements the main Moldovan Cup, featuring teams from the top division, National Division, and lower leagues. This tournament embodies the competitive essence of Moldovan football, offering underdogs a shot at glory against elite clubs. Since the 2010s, it has carved a niche in the calendar with thrilling encounters and upsets.

History and foundation

Launched in the early 2000s by FAM to bolster cup competitions, the first official edition kicked off in 2008, gaining traction from 2012. Highlights include Zaria Bălți's 2015 triumph over Sheriff Tiraspol (3-1 final), snapping their dominance. Dacia-Buiucani's 2019 final run stunned fans. It weathered COVID-19 with bubble formats. Fun fact: The 2021 Petrocub-Sakura clash drew a record 5,000 spectators, a milestone for Moldova.

Tournament format

Single-elimination knockout with 32–48 entrants from pro and amateur ranks. Early rounds (1/16 to quarters) are single-leg ties on neutral or home/away basis. Semis and final are two-legged. Winner claims the trophy, €50,000 prize, and a UEFA Conference League spot if unqualified elsewhere. Runs August to May, winter break included.
