The Lithuanian Football Championship's First League (A Lyga) is the top tier of national football, featuring elite clubs battling for the title and European spots. With 10 teams, it delivers thrilling encounters and nurtures homegrown talent amid fierce competition.

History and foundation

Founded in 1991 post-Soviet era, A Lyga saw FK Žalgiris Vilnius dominate the 90s with multiple titles. The 2000s brought challenges like corruption scandals and club bankruptcies, but a revival from 2015 under LFF introduced licensing reforms and better facilities. Highlights include Žalgiris's 15 championships, Suduva's shock 2019 win after two decades, andPanevėžys's 2023 triumph as newcomers.

Tournament format

Running March to November, the 10-team league plays a double round-robin (36 matches). Top three earn European qualification: 1st to Champions League, 2nd/3rd to Conference League. Bottom side relegates directly, 9th enters playoffs. Recent tweaks include promotion/relegation play-offs for added drama.
