The Liberia Championship First Division, commonly called the Liberian Premier League, is the top tier of football in Liberia. It features the country's elite clubs vying for the national title and spots in African continental competitions, embodying the resilience of a football-loving nation amid past adversities.

History and foundation

Established in 1946 under the Liberia Football Association (LFA), the league faced suspensions during the civil wars of the 1990s and 2000s but relaunched strongly in 2006 with 10 teams. Notably, Lonestar FC dominated with eight straight titles from 2005 to 2012. A fun fact: George Weah, Ballon d'Or winner and African scoring legend, hails from Liberia, though his pro career was abroad. Playoff formats were introduced in 2020.

Tournament format

The season runs from October to June, pausing for the rainy season. 10-12 teams compete in a double round-robin format, playing home and away. The champion is decided by points total, with tiebreakers for equality. Bottom teams relegate to the Second Division. Winners advance to CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup qualifiers.
